“Careless talk costs lives”

Discretion should always be your watchword when discussing Company matters. This applies both at work and at any time outside the sites. "Careless talk costs lives" is a phrase that can apply to much of the information with which we have to work. Its (sic) disclosure to the wrong party could cause exceptionally grave damage, serious injury, or be damaging or undesirable to the interests of the Nation - or to the long-term prospects of the Company.

And you thought it was just the name of a indie music magazine....

Land of the free, home of the brave?

So I was reading some extracts from Micheal Moore's new book and an interview with him on the Guardian's site, and they made some interesting viewing. Sample extract:

In the manufacturing sector, for example, British CEOs make 24 times as much as their average workers - the widest gap in Europe (...) But here in the US, the average CEO makes 411 times the salaries of their blue-collar workers.

While he's got as much as an agenda as most lobbyists have, it's nice to think that there's at least a few dissenting voices speaking out against Bush and the crazy legislation that his government is putting out.

Anyway, reading those articles reminded me of some choice quotes gleamed from Mr Moore and other places. Of course all know the old adage about statistics, but hell, they're amusing (in a scary arn't-you-glad-you-don't-live-there kindof way)...

  • Almost half (48%) believe the US has had special protection from God for most of its history (Micheal Moore)
  • Americans are three times as likely to believe in the Virgin Birth of Jesus (83 percent) as in evolution (28 percent). (New York Times)
  • Today the Justice Department did issue a 'Blanket Alert'. It was in recognition of a general threat that we received. This is not the first time the Justice Department has acted like this. I hope it's the last, but given the attitude of the evil-doers, it may not be. (George W. Bush)

(Yeah, I know the last one is an old one, but hey, it's a good one)

And for anyone know says this post is unamerican and biased, will here's a nice US schools project for all the patriots out there...

Random Musings iTunes for Windows + existing iPod = happy Dave

So Apple announced (or people figured out) that they're gonna launch iTunes for Windows next thursday. Excellent! - My iPod has had to put up with the wonders (?!) of MusicMatch Jukebox, or the unstable but not bad Ephpod, and having the proper software for it to work with will surely make it a happy bunny. Of course I still need to get a car kit for the damn thing so I can use it on my way to work, but hey - isn't that what payday's for?

Not that any of this detracts me from wanting a new 15" PowerBook, but having read about some of the teething problems Apple seem to be having with their new model, I think I can wait for a bit...

News How do they think up this stuff?

Ok, I've just seem the most fucked up online cartoon since.... I dunno, quite a while. It's called Happy Tree Friends, but seeing as I always seem to be the the last to catch onto the latest 'cool' thing on the web I've sure the world+dog already owns the complete DVD box-set. However, if you haven't seen it then it's worth checking out. I'll leave you with the content of their footer to intrege you: Cartoon Violence - Not recommended for small children or big babies.

News Show those funky links, web monkey

I came across this site, mainly due to reading about blog spam. However the most interesting thing about his site was the cool hyperlinks he was using. So I set about finding out about them (or ripping off his code, depending on which way you look at it), and it turns out the code was written by a nice guy called Stuart Langridge, and even better still, the code is free to use. So as you can see, it's not taken me long to use it on my site. :-)

Oh, and if you're using a decent browser then they'll be semi-transparent as well...

News So little time...

I was planning on writing a review of iTunes for Windows today, but what with one thing and another (i.e. being at work all day and then finally getting home at 10pm after visiting a few people) I haven't got round to it, so hopefully that'll be up tomorrow.

In the mean time I've added a feature for all the grammar Nazis - a spell checker to the comments, so if you preview your comment it'll spell-check it for you :-)

Oh, the wonders of modern technology...

Reviews iTunes for Windows

Having lusted over the original Mac iTunes since I first played with it two years ago, the rumors of a Windows port back in the spring brought a smile to my face. So when those rumors became solid facts, it was with baited breath that I waited for its release. Well, iTunes has come to Windows (apparently Hell Froze Over), and after playing with it for a few days I have to say it's looking good....
