And yes, you can actually buy then!
So I happened on this posting (via Ars Technica), about the latest 'game' to play on Amazon - checking out the 'contrarians' reviews of books, music and film. What's one of them?
I hear you cry. Well, it's (I quote) someone who tears apart cultural icons, movies that you might have accidentally thought were good, etc., all with the most over-the-top, absolutist views possible.
A couple of good (read hilarious) examples:
Seven Samurai: This movie seems to be a scene-by-scene copy of one of my favorite movies-"Magnificent Seven". Magnificent seven is a classic movie that has been copied many times, but I didn't know westerns were popular enough in japan to be copied.
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb: I have no idea why people say this is the funniest movie ever made. I don't get it, and I love comedies. I have seen it four times and I still do not get it. Maybe it is because I don't get Kubrick movies. I have seen several of them and don't get any of them. If you want to see a funny movie see Blazing Saddles. My suggestion: Rent the movie first and see if you like it.
Yet another thing on the Internet to waste hours of your life on... ;-)
Edit: I spotted this one and just had to include it!
This Is Spinal Tap (Special Edition)
I have followed Spinal Tap very sporadically over the years, mostly since their buzz after the release of this film (I honestly remember hearing very little about them during the seventies). After viewing this documentary, I believe the filmmaker could have done better both in his editing choices and his choice of bands. While Spinal Tap is capable of turning out the occasional catchy tune, it's obvious watching this film that they were/are basically one-trick ponies. Whether that's the fault of the editor, I can't say. I will say that viewing this film made me only want the hits (collected on the film's soundtrack) and it did not give me the desire to seek out their earlier work ("Shark Sandwich" and "Intravenous De Milo", both of which seem to be out of print anyway).
I guess my real complaint is with the filmmakers, as I'm wondering why they chose to cover such a little-known group when there were perfectly acceptable alternatives: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Eddie Money, and/or Motorhead. Spinal Tap may have been an interesting story, but they're hardly a band worth making immortal through film.
Can this actually be a serious review?
Does anyone want a (free) gmail email account? I've just been given three invitations to invite friends. Let me know if you want one.
Curtesy of Tara, I've got myself a nice and shiny gmail account. I've even got a nice early adopter name as well :-)
There's already been a million and one 'reviews' of gmail, so I'm not gonna bother writing one myself, but from my quick play around with it it seems very nice. They're making good use of Dynamic HTML to allow all sorts of user interface stuff which you don't usually get with web-based email, such as in-place spell-checking, and making most dialogs part of the same page, just hidden, so they appear instantly when you click on them (much like my 'show/hide comments' links)
However, It doesn't support such modern essentials as IMAP access, and not only that but I recently bought some paid email hosting from Runbox, which has those sort of features and more, so I'm not sure how much (if at all) I'll use gmail... If they add in some of the features they intend to, then I may end up using it more... Besides, a Gig of online storage apace is always useful :-)
And that total in closeup...
All between 23 people - Impressive eh? ;-)
I've sucessfully managed to get a pair of tickets for glastonbury this year!
After hammering the aloud.com site from 8pm to 11:30pm, I heard Peel read out an email that said some guy had been able to get tickets from the international order number (01159934170). I promptly tried the aforementioned number (which Peel had read out on air), and managed to get through to the queue on the second attmept or so! After that, I was waiting for about 5 minutes, when I was actually speaking to a real person!! I found this quite hard to comprehend, and just about managed to communicate my details to the nice man, resulting in a pair of tickets and a car-pass.
YYYYYEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!
:-D
It seems that Mark and Lard are leaving Radio 1. NOOOOOO!!!! - they were one of the last remaining good things on Radio 1, and even worse, the comedy double act is lost, as Mark is off to Radio 2 and Lard to 6music.... Another great example of the slow demise that is settling on the BBCs 'flagship' music station.
According to /., the Windows 2000 and NT source code has been leaked. So, what does this mean? Well, (if true) it means that a hell of a lot more virii will probably spring up, as the virus writers can see exactly how Windows works, and more specifically where the holes are. Could be an interesting next few months in the IT world...
Note: In case anyone doesn't understand what the source code is; it is basically the 'recipe' for a computer program; if you have it you can 'make' Windows, or more importantly, find out how it works and change it. Think of it as Microsoft's equivalent of Coca-Cola's secret recipe.
After the fiasco that was the ticket sales for the Pixies' two dates at the Brixton academy (they sold out, mainly to touts, in about 6 minutes...), I've managed to get a pair of tickets for the second set of gigs! It seems that due to the rediculously high demand for the first two dates, they're added a second pair of dates on the 4th and 5th of June, and this time the website selling them didn't melt in 5 seconds...
Of course, if they do end up playing Glastonbury (and I manage to get a ticket to that), then I'll see then twice - not bad for a band that split up over ten years ago! :-)
Note: I had written a much longer, more humorous and generally better entry, but then I closed down my web browser before posting it.... so you get the abridged version :-(
There's a somewhat cool site I found while wandering round the net, which allows you to take the layout of one webpage and superimpose the content from another site on top, like this - try it out yourself!
I finished work for the year today, and am off until the 5th of January! Thank god, I'm in need of a break, gotta get used to the lack of half terms and long Christmas / Easter / Summer holidays now :-(
Should have taken these last two days off and finished on friday - there's been hardly anyone in today and yesterday, and what I'm doing ATM requires me to discuss a lot of stuff with other people, so I've been slightly unproductive over the last two days ;-)
So what does the boy do with his new-found freedom? - spend about and hour pissing about with my Amazon 'Your Recommendations' so they actually read like stuff I want - It had the gall to recommended Potter to me! Can you believe it?!?
:-)
I've been moving the hosting for my site from my ADSL provider to a dedicated hosting company. While this will interest no-one (least of all me, its taken far too long), this has the general net result that you get proper URLs for the site (www.amunra.co.uk) and not a crappy subdomain (www.amun-ra.f2s.com). In addition, this allows be to use a better photo gallery, and the site should generally be faster.
In addition, if I've got the voodoo right on mod_rewrite then any old links that reference to the old domain will automagically redirect to the correct page on the proper domain
(In case you haven't got the hint yet - please use www.amunra.co.uk, and not www.amun-ra.f2s.com to get here - thanks!)

I've just got back from watching the Matrix Revolutions. Hmmm. I don't want to spoil it plotwise etc for anyone who hasn't seen it, so I think the best way to describe it is this:
If the Matrix was a stealthy ninja, shrouded in mystery and with the ability to amaze and astound, then the Matrix Revolutions is a drunken street brawler that's been learning Jiu-Jitsu for 2 months - full bodied and 'in your face', but any grace or subtlty has yet to be learned....
There's a new Happy Tree Friends episode up - their Hallowe'en special - enjoy! (?)
In other news, I've got round to putting up an about page, you you can find out all kinds of interesting facts about me and my site...
I was planning on writing a review of iTunes for Windows today, but what with one thing and another (i.e. being at work all day and then finally getting home at 10pm after visiting a few people) I haven't got round to it, so hopefully that'll be up tomorrow.
In the mean time I've added a feature for all the grammar Nazis - a spell checker to the comments, so if you preview your comment it'll spell-check it for you :-)
Oh, the wonders of modern technology...

Check out Apple's front page - nice to see they don't take themselves too seriously :-)
